The graded I listed home was founded in 1154 by the Cistercians, however the only remains of the original Abbey buildings is the 14th-century Gatehouse. In 1558 Lord Mayor of London Sir Thomas Leigh acquired the estate and a house was built on the site of the monastic buildings.
